About

PIFSC deployed two High-frequency Acoustic Recording Packages (HARPs) east of Tinian and west of Saipan during 2010 through 2013 in order to further characterize cetacean occurrence and temporal trends in the MIRC. Beginning in 2013, the U.S. Navy partnered with PIFSC to analyze the existing acoustic monitoring data for the occurrence of baleen whales and beaked whales to better understand the seasonal use of the MIRC by these species and their seasonal relative abundance. Study objectives were driven by the specific questions outlined in the MIRC Monitoring Plan, including: (1) What species of beaked whales and other odontocetes occur around Guam and Saipan? (2) What is the seasonal occurrence of baleen whales around Guam, Saipan, Tinian, and Rota?
