The protected status of false killer whale (Pseudorca crassidens) populations in Hawaiian waters, combined with limited data on population sizes and trends in their abundance, makes it critical to develop monitoring methods and to mitigate negative interactions between false killer whale populations and anthropogenic activities. Acoustic methods are wellsuited for studying and monitoring this species, due to its soniferous (i.e., sound-producing) nature. Continued development of methods for detection and classification of marine mammal sounds requires extensive datasets for training classifiers and ground-truthing detection algorithms.
