This summer Southall Environmental Associates (SEA) lead the first-ever direct study on how military sonar impacts dolphins. This study is funded by the Office of Naval Research Marine Mammals and Biology Program, which supports basic and applied research and technology development related to understanding the effects of sound on marine mammals, including physiological, behavioral, ecological and population-level effects. The ultimate goal of projects like this is to pioneer new methods that can be transitioned to the marine species monitoring program in support of environmental compliance requirements. You can read more about this project on the SEA website as well as see additional press coverage.
